The second project we collaborated on with Tom Doak in Australia in the early 2000’s. The other being Barnbougle Dunes. Originally 36 holes were planned for this wonderful piece of dune-land on the Mornington Peninsula. Tom routed the majority of the first course (Gunnamatta) while we routed the second. Sadly only the first course ever got built.
The original owners failed to sustain their financial model and the course was abandoned for a full eighteen months before a new owner revived it as a public course and it is now thriving – as it should given it’s one of the very best courses in the country.
The design and construction of St. Andrews Beach was a great exercise is minimalism. As the before and after photos illustrate very few of the holes required any significant earth moving aside from excavating the bunkers and softening or adding a few contours around the greens.
