Lanhai International, our first project in China, is a 36-hole development on Chongming Island just across the Yangtze River an hour from the middle of Shanghai. The Links course was built by reclaiming material from the Yangtze River, with the original designers creating striking undulations across the property to produced a dramatic golfing landscape. The design did however did feature some perceived weaknesses that the new owners sought to remedy with a major redevelopment.
The course redevelopment focused on rebuilding the greens and bunkers to improve their shaping and to accentuate their strategic interest. The removal of cart paths was also included to create a walking course, a rare offering in China, and a move that has greatly improved the course’s aesthetic appeal. The course re-opened to members in 2018, with the changes proving to be popular with the club’s membership and receiving attention across the world.
Commenced 2017, scheduled to open 2018
